AGM or lithium? AGM batteries are sealed, maintenance-free and the lower-cost option. For a long life, it’s best to use only about half an AGM battery’s rated capacity before recharging. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries cost more up front, but they weigh far less, let you use most of their capacity, last many more charge cycles and recharge faster. Many include Bluetooth monitoring. Lithium batteries need a charger with a lithium charging profile.

Choosing a size. Battery capacity is measured in amp hours (Ah). Add up what you’ll run between charges: each device’s amps multiplied by the hours it runs. For example, a fridge drawing about 3 amps and cycling on about half the time uses around 36Ah a day. Because of the usable-capacity difference, an AGM battery needs roughly twice your daily use, while a lithium battery needs a little more than it. For trolling motors, match the battery voltage to your motor (12V, 24V or 36V).
