Softbait Sets

Shop softbait rod and reel combos online at Smart Marine, from Shimano, Daiwa, Penn, Okuma, Abu Garcia and Shakespeare. Softbaiting is one of the most popular ways to catch snapper in New Zealand, and a matched set takes the guesswork out of choosing your gear. The rod and reel are balanced to work together, and many come spooled with braid, ready to fish.

Choosing a softbait combo. Most softbait sets pair a 7 to 7'6" spinning rod with a 2500 to 4000 size reel. 3-6kg and 4-8kg combos suit most snapper fishing in harbours and inshore waters, while 6-10kg combos handle bigger snapper, deeper water and the odd kingfish. Two-piece rods are easier to transport and store.

Rig up and go. Pair your combo with softbaits and jigheads, add a fluorocarbon leader, and keep your baits organised in a softbait wallet. Need to respool? See our braid range.

A softbait combo makes a great Christmas gift. Not sure which one? A Smart Marine gift card lets them choose.
