Fishing Tackle FAQs
What fishing tackle do I need for snapper in NZ?
A typical snapper setup uses circle or recurve hooks around 3/0 to 5/0, a running sinker or flasher rig, and a fluorocarbon leader. Softbaits on a jighead are also highly effective in shallower water. A snapper tackle pack is an easy way to get started.
Should I use braid or mono?
Braid has almost no stretch, so you feel more bites and can use thinner line for the same strength. That makes it the go-to for softbaiting and jigging. Mono is more forgiving, cheaper and easier for beginners, and it works well for straylining and surfcasting.
Why use a fluorocarbon leader?
Fluorocarbon is less visible underwater than mono and more resistant to abrasion from rocks, reef and fish teeth. It's usually tied to the end of braid.
