New lifejacket laws are here. Is yours up to the job?
Summer is almost here, and there's an important change every Kiwi boatie needs to know about!
As of 9 October 2026, new nationwide lifejacket laws are in effect, making it compulsory for everyone aboard recreational craft 6 metres and under to wear a properly fitted lifejacket while underway, unless an exemption applies.
Whether you're heading out fishing, cruising with the family or exploring our waterways by kayak, now's the perfect time to check your safety gear and make sure everyone is ready for the season ahead.
The new legislation introduces one consistent nationwide requirement for small recreational craft, replacing the previous mix of regional wearing rules.
Everyone aboard recreational craft 6 metres and under must wear a lifejacket while underway. This includes adults and children on small motorboats, dinghies, jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards and sailboats.
Importantly, *underway* doesn't necessarily mean moving. Even drifting with the engine switched off counts, provided the craft isn't anchored, aground or secured to shore.
For boats over 6 metres, existing lifejacket requirements remain in place, including wearing them during heightened-risk situations.
Certain exemptions apply, including specific swimming, diving and watersports activities.

According to Maritime NZ, an average of 17 people lose their lives in recreational boating incidents each year, with approximately two-thirds not wearing properly fitted lifejackets.
Unexpected waves, changing weather and sudden accidents can happen in seconds. Wearing a correctly fitted lifejacket provides essential buoyancy when you need it most.
The message is simple: Wear your lifejacket. Every trip, every time.
Not necessarily! If your existing lifejacket meets an approved safety standard, fits correctly and is in good condition, it may still be suitable.
However, Maritime NZ recommends replacing lifejackets more than 10 years old. Damaged materials, worn straps or an incorrect fit are also signs it's time for an upgrade.
